As The World Stood Still

Here is a solo student project created with the use of props and materials from various kits, megascans, as well as some of my own, with the goal of refining my Set Dressing/lighting skills and to summarize all the things I've learned over the course of this semester.

Special Thanks to both my lighting and Tech Art teachers, Carl Bouchon and Christian Guertin, respectively, for sitting with me for some much needed feedback/knowledge. And to Matthieu Perron, for making the ambient track.

A rule of thumb I learned throughout this past year is that movement can go a long way. I tried to tap into that as much as possible using things like particle effects, wind, and even crows, to breathe life into an otherwise dead wasteland.

I spent particularly a lot of time on the road set up. I used a blend of decals, vertex painting and meshes overlayed over one another to achieve a very natural effect.

I learned along the way that minute details can really help tie in the narrative quality and ambience of a scene. The boarded up windows and yellow hazard strips were a last minute consideration after iterating on the scene for awhile.

Modularity was a big concern of mine while working on this scene. Especially as far as the architecture goes, with the sidewalk being a mix of tiled squares and a muddy grass on a flat plain underneath

As if it needs to be said. Mysterious and rebellious graffiti bandit is the voice of the people. F*** Covid, indeed.

The project started with an untextured blocking of a montreal street scene provided for a class. I took everything apart and kept only the basic components for the scene, such as the buildings, and used these as a base kit to work with.

I ended up either re-modelling, texturing or just tweaking and retopologizing some of the source material to better fit my pipeline. Here is a road kit that I created using that base, whereas the previous photo is of some of the props I worked on
